Week 11 (CHC)

Okra seeds ready to be planted--a great reminder that we are
constantly in the process of sowing and reaping.
We have an exciting week up ahead.  You will be working in teams to read and evaluate essays written by students in another class.  Doing this will allow you to sharpen your writing skills as you pay attention to what makes for a good paper.  The challenge and gift of holding someone's words--not merely words but ideas, dreams, and important parts of their lives--is a great responsibility.  Although difficult, I'm sure that you will carry out this job with great care and a keen desire to learn the most from it.  We will go over  the rubric that was attached to the essays and then use them to work through the process.

As you read the two papers with your partner, I would like for you to write down in your notebooks four sentences. The two best sentences from the essay and the two most grammatically challenged.

You will need to Tweet the four sentences and use the following hashtag in your post:  #kcampuschat.  Each person in the evaluation team should Tweet a set of sentences.

If you have not  used Twitter before, please sign up.  It's one more tool I would like for you to try and use.  Like Instagram, it's one way to collaborate and create knowledge together.  If your phone does not have Twitter capability, you can use your computer.

I will be Storifying these sentences and working on a writing assignment that will bring into focus on editing issues.

Photo Walk Essay

Besides reading and evaluating essays this week, you should be very busy working on your Photo Walk Essay of the campus.  Last week I went over how to use Storify; I also pointed out that this assignment is an essay and that you will need to work doubly hard on creating a coherent storyline with your pictures and captions.  Keep in mind that you will need 12 photographs, 12 paragraphs to accompany the images, and an enticing introduction and conclusion to help bring the work together.  The assignment is due as a Storify page by Wednesday, November 21.  This assignment is worth 500 points.

Shanty 2012 Extra Credit Assignment

If you are planning on participating in Shanty 2012 (November 17) and receive 100 extra credit points, please make sure to talk to me during class early in the week.  We have work to do!  Your first task is to like the Facebook page and learn more about the effort.

Readings and Notebook Writing

Make sure that you continue writing in your notebooks.  There will be a notebook check next week.  It will be an all or nothing evaluation.  Have all your work and earn 100 points!  For those of you who did not complete all of your work from the previous notebook check, you will need to have that as well.  Here's the table of contents you should include.

Finally, make sure to read and respond to "Make Statements and Answer Questions," "The Action of a Sentence," "A Big Topic: Eroticism," and "A Tourist in Your Own Town."
